Geography
Eritrea is located in eastern Africa, bounded by Sudan to the northwest, by
Djibouti to the southeast, and by Ethiopia to the south and west. Its
northeastern coastline along the Red Sea stretches for almost 620 miles. The
Dahlak islands are part of Eritrean territory.

Climate
The climate is semiarid in the western lowland areas, where rainfall is less
than 20 inches a year, and wetter and cooler in the central highlands, which
receive an average 40 inches of rain annually. Temperatures range from an
average 63F in the highlands to 86F in the lowlands. There is a hot desert strip
along the Red Sea coastline, and some of the highest temperatures on
Earth--often topping 122F--have been recorded in the southeastern Danakil
Depression.
